Towards a Working Definition of Designing Generative User Interfaces

Kyungho Lee. Towards a Working Definition of Designing Generative User Interfaces. ACM Designing Interactive Systems (DIS’25) Provocations and Works in Progress. https://doi.org/10.1145/3715668.3736365

User interface (UI) design—the way apps and websites appear and function—is evolving rapidly. In the past, designers built these interfaces mostly by hand using tools like Adobe Creative Suite. But now, powerful AI tools like ChatGPT and design assistants are joining the process. These tools can help generate layouts, write code, and even suggest improvements.

This shift isn’t just about working faster—it’s transforming the core of how design works. Instead of designers doing all the work alone, they now collaborate with AI, creating together in real time. However, even with this growth, there’s still confusion about what exactly “Generative UI” means and how best to design it. This paper aims to clarify that.

By reviewing past literature, interviewing experts, and analyzing real-world examples, the author proposes a working definition of Generative UI. The goal is to help designers and researchers better understand this new approach to working—where people and AI design interfaces side by side—and establish a foundation for future research and development in this area.
